FIELD GUIDE / PRACTICAL STEPS

How to Find a File’s Real Format

Use magic bytes when a filename extension has been changed.

← ALL FIELD GUIDES

Work through this in order

  1. Compare the reported extension with known header signatures
  2. Check whether an archive is a renamed OOXML file
  3. Look for SQLite or PDF magic bytes
  4. Inspect the first 256 bytes when detection is inconclusive
  5. Treat uncertain results as unknown rather than guessing

Use the matching tool

Inspect a local copy with File Signature Detector. After the check, save or repair files only using trusted software that supports the format.
