DOCUMENT PREVIEW / SCOPE AND LIMITS

What a preview can—and cannot—tell you.

Understand what browser previews show and omit for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB and OpenDocument files, including formulas and protected content.

OpenMyFile uses a browser-local, text-first strategy for common document containers. A successful extraction is useful for inspection, but is not equivalent to opening the document in its authoring application. No Office macros, scripts, spreadsheet formulas or presentation transitions are executed.

DOCX: text and tables, not pixel-perfect pages

A DOCX is typically a ZIP package with XML parts. The DOCX viewer can inspect supported document parts, paragraphs and table text. Fonts, tracked revisions, footnotes, embedded objects, page breaks, images, text-box placement and exact layout may be absent or simplified. Complex content can therefore appear out of order.

XLSX: worksheet values without recalculation

The XLSX viewer reads supported worksheet XML and shared strings. It does not run formulas, refresh linked data, infer external data sources, or recreate charts, conditional formatting or merged-cell layout. A cached formula result may be stale. Numbers displayed without Excel formatting can look different from values shown by the original workbook.

PPTX: slide text and notes only

PowerPoint presentations may contain layered shapes, charts, images, animations, speaker notes, video and theme information. The PPTX viewer extracts supported textual content and notes; it does not render slides as the author designed them. Speaker notes and slide ordering should be cross-checked in a full viewer before presentation use.

EPUB: chapters and package metadata

The EPUB viewer reads supported unencrypted EPUB package parts and text chapters, within size limits. Embedded fonts, complex CSS, navigation, page layout and multimedia may not be faithfully reproduced. DRM-protected EPUBs cannot be decrypted here.

ODT, ODS and ODP: extractable information

OpenDocument files also use structured archive containers. Supported text and table entries may be extracted, but original layout, formulas, pivot tables, images and advanced styling are not fully reproduced. Opening in LibreOffice or another reputable compatible application is a better final check.

When the preview is incomplete

Do not assume missing content means the original file is blank or corrupt. Check the file size, extension and signature. ZIP encryption, unsupported compression, a large XML part or embedded-only content can prevent extraction. Compare the extracted preview against the original using a trusted native application, particularly for contracts, financial information and accessibility-critical documents. Read our supported formats page for additional limits.
